The pen tool is a very tricky tool to use. It takes a lot of messing around to use it effectively, I sadly cannot fully explain how to use it but I will give you the essential features. First, whenever using the pen tool, make sure to go to the Paths tab (same toolbar as the Layers and Channels tabs) and Create a new path layer(click the little square icon at the bottom of the toolbar). Now that you have a new path layer, click the pen tool. With this, click once where your x and y axis meet, click and hold somewhere near the middle of the x axis. While you are holding pull down until you have a good curve and let go. Now click and hold again where you want your curve to end up, this will make a sine curve looking thing if you have done it correctly.

If you have gotten this far you're doing extremely well, the hard part is over! Now we can stroke our new path. Go back to the Layers tab quickly and create a new layer, then select the Brush tool set to whatever color you would like and whatever thickness (mine is an off white, 1 pixel). Go back to the Paths Tab and click the Stroke button at the bottom of the Paths tab - it's a little circle - and remember to have the Brush tool selected when you do this! Once you've clicked stroke it's been done, now unselect the path by clicking any open space in the Paths tab. Go back to the layers Tab.

Now you are in the home stretch. The last parts of this image were simply the text I added in and two little points at the ends of the sine curve, both of those things you can easily do without my instruction if you've made it this far! I hope this tutorial had some useful information and was clear enough to follow. If you have any questions at all, do not hesitate to send me an e-mail and I'll be happy to help you out.
